Over Cal’s Spring Break (Mon. March 21-Th. March 24, 2022), students gain exposure to different facets of a public service career: legislative paths, community organizations, local, state, and federal government, and philanthropy. Participants learn from presenters about the opportunities available in these fields and network with presenters and amongst themselves to create a cohort on campus—and beyond—to support their career goals. This year, in an expansion of the program, we are also offering Democracy Camp in DC (Sat. May 21-Fri. May 27, 2022), to give students a view into federal public service careers. Students interested in learning more about the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans are welcome to make an individual advising appointment with Keila Diehl (ourschol-coordinator@berkeley.edu).

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is a two-year, merit-based fellowship exclusively for immigrants and children of immigrants, age 30 or younger, who are pursuing graduate work in any degree-granting program in any field at any university in the United States. Selection is based on merit, with an emphasis on creativity, originality, initiative, and sustained accomplishment. Neither financial need nor distributive considerations are taken into account in the selection process.

In addition to the children of immigrants, Green Card holders, naturalized citizens, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, the Fellowship also supports individuals who have come to the United States as refugees or asylum seekers and who have received a Green Card or become naturalized US citizens. The Fellowship also supports immigrants who were born abroad and graduated from both high school and college in the United States. Each year, fellows receive $25,000 in stipend support, as well as up to $20,000 toward tuition.

My name is Snigdha and I’m an admin of Splash at Berkeley, a student organization that allows high school students from around the Bay Area to take classes across a variety of subjects.

Berkeley students who register to teach on the day of Splash can teach any subject of their choice—from an introduction to their major to teaching board game strategies.

Instill your passion about any subject to high schoolers around the Bay Area! Splash is a student organization that brings over 400 high school students to Berkeley’s campus for a day of unlimited learning through classes taught by Berkeley students (YOU)! This year, Splash will be online via Zoom on Saturday, October 30th, 2021.

Splash is a low-commitment, high-impact educational outreach opportunity that also gives you agency on your course. You choose the topic, how many students can enroll in your class, and how many sessions you teach throughout the day. If you would like to teach with others, you can also have co-facilitator(s) in a course.

If you or your friend(s) are interested in teaching a course to high school students, sign up to register as a teacher here.
