TEXAS DEFENDER SERVICE
PRE-LAW FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
Considering law school? Curious about public interest law? Interested in capital defense? Would you like to get paid to satisfy your curiosity?
If this describes you, then apply to the Texas Defender Service for a one-year fellowship that will allow you to work as a legal assistant and see the practice of public interest law from the inside of a non-profit law firm that focuses on capital defense and improving Texas’ indigent defense system.
Texas Defender Service (TDS) is a non-profit organization established in 1995 by experienced Texas death penalty attorneys. Our mission is to establish a fair and just criminal justice system in Texas by eliminating unfair use of the death penalty and establishing criminal justice system that works. We have three core programs: (1) post-conviction litigation and consulting in capital cases; (2) capital trial litigation, attorney training, and consulting; and (3) policy reform, which includes research and issue advocacy at the legislative level.
This fellowship position will provide a strong foundation for your eventual application to law school. Our fellow will be placed in our Houston office as a litigation legal assistant responsible for maintaining litigation files, obtaining and filing legal documents, analyzing legal material for internal use, conducting legal and factual research for attorneys, and collecting and analyzing evidence for use in legal filings and court appearances. A key part of the job will be maintaining office databases and activity logs. Knowledge of Word Perfect and the Microsoft Office Suite, including Access, is essential.
The fellowship is for one year, but is renewable for a second year. The fellowship comes with an annual salary of $27,500 and generous benefits.
The successful fellowship candidate will possess: an undergraduate degree, good academic credentials, and three letters of recommendation from individuals who have knowledge of the candidate’s aptitude and abilities. Priority in consideration will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated ability to handle difficult and sensitive situations using sound, independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines; and maintain confidentiality. The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, and three letters of recommendation to search@texasdefender.org.
The application deadline is June 15, 2012.

3) ASUC Reps needed
ASUC Reps needed
I am Andreas Lazaris, a student at UC Berkeley serving as the Deputy
of Academic Policy of the ASUC, in the Office of the Academic Affairs
Vice President (AAVP). As the new academic year approaches, I am
heading the appointment process for undergraduate representatives in
the UC Berkeley Academic Senate. The Berkeley Division of the
systemwide Academic Senate formulates positions on campus and
systemwide issues through a deliberative process that includes
standing committees, Divisional Council, and plenary meetings of its
Senate membership. Faculty Senate leaders also consult regularly with
their administrative counterparts.
This year, the Academic Senate is calling for 1-2 undergraduate
representatives on 14 of its committees. I write to you regarding the
possibility that you will distribute the application for these
positions to the students enrolled as Legal Studies majors at UC
Berkeley. The AAVP Office hopes to create a diverse and knowledgeable
force of student representation in the Academic Senate and knows that
it will find strong candidates in the politically-motivated students
of the Legal Studies major.
Below is the link to the application. The applications are due by June
31, and students can apply to 3 committees. I appreciate your time and
hope to hear from you soon!
