Lauri Needs Volunteers!!!

I would be forever in your debt if you would volunteer for the Legal Studies Commencement Ceremony this year. The ceremony is on Sunday, May 13th early in the morning.
I need people who will for sure show up to help.

E-mail ASAP me if you can come for sure!
It’s actually a fun event, the graduates are all happy and so are their families.
You’ll be able to see what the ceremony is like, see your friends graduate and join in the festivities at the reception afterward. The tasks are really easy, too.
And you can feel really good about helping me out!

I need at least 3 volunteers, but more than three would be great.

Thanks!
E-mail me

R&C for Juniors/Seniors

If you are a junior or senior who is not able to enroll in R&C for fall, and you are looking to fulfill the second half of R&C over the summer, there is space in SSEAS R5B. The instructor’s past evaluations are impressive.

South Asia R5B Reading and Composition Summer Course July 2- August 10 CCN: 83915
India in the Writer’s Eye
**This course will not count towards the Legal Studies major.**

This summer you can read novels, learn about modern India and satisfy the
second semester of the reading and composition requirement. We will even
have fun (two of the novels are comedic)! The readings explore the theme
of circulation looking at how movements of people, concepts, material, and
systems of commerce and governance have intersected in India. The novels
selected also focus on place in terms of geography, imagination, social
hierarchies and the built environment. The aim of this course is to
develop writing practice as a form of critical thinking. Our work will be
centered on the creation of essays, getting and giving feedback on these
compositions and revising written work. The instructor, a socio-cultural
anthropologist, has taught courses in ESL, Composition, Ethics, Religious
Studies, Media, Film, and of course Socio-cultural and Biological
Anthropology

Letters & Science C103 / Journalism C103: Telling Stories about Food and Agriculture
Michael Pollan, Knight Professor of Journalism
**This course will not count towards the Legal Studies major.**

Tuesdays 6-7:30, Wheeler Auditorium (L&S ccn: 52000; Journalism ccn: 48037)

2 units, Pass/No Pass

A national debate has begun about the future of food and agriculture in America. As the costs of our industrialized food system—to the environment, to the public health, to farmers and food workers, and to our social life—become impossible to ignore, a national movement to reform that system is building. Telling stories about where our food comes from and how it is produced— and how it might be produced differently—has played a critical role in bringing attention to the issue and shifting the political dynamic. This course will explore these stories and tell some new ones. Each week a prominent figure in the food movement –a farmer, journalist, policymaker, theater director, expert, cook or activist—will make a presentation and field our questions: What needs to be done to make the food system healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable? What is the role of storytelling in that process?

Please direct any questions about submission guidelines to gwsjournal@gmail.com with the subject “Submission Guidelines Question.”
My name is Ada Gu and I am writing on behalf of the organization, the Social Enterprise Alliance: Next Generation Committee.

We carry out our work through four strategies:

-We spread knowledge and build capacity — Through a variety of offerings including our newsletter, a monthly webinar series, npEnterprise (our official listserv), subscriptions, our mp3 Learning Series and our new Knowledge Center, we are the go-to source for the intellectual capital which fuels social enterprise.
- We build social enterprise communities and networks — We have rapidly built out a network of local social enterprise communities with 14 SEA chapters in 12 states. Together with our national convening power, we help social enterprisers find, learn from and support each other.
- We tell the stories and aggregate the impact of social enterprise — We vigorously promote the amazing narratives of our members, accumulate the evidence of field impact, and are the voice of the sector in numerous collaborations and partnerships.
- We advocate and promote supportive public policy — We seek to create a public environment in which social enterprise can maximize its leverage. Our State and Local Policy Toolkit helps our chapters and local members build this ecosystem locally, while at a national level we work on issues including social innovation initiatives, social impact bonds, government procurement, SBA lending and technical support for social enterprise and federal workforce programs and policies.

YEP is a student volunteer organization that connects students from the
University of California to children held in federal detention because of
their immigration status. Specifically, YEP volunteers from UC Berkeley
work with children who are detained in Fairfield, CA. These children are
separated from their families and loved ones and face deportation alone.
YEP provides moral accompaniment and encouragement to these children
during this scary and uncertain time by connecting them to student role
models from UC Berkeley.

Although YEP’s primary goal is to provide hope to this vulnerable
population of children, in reality, it is the children who inspire us! We
hope to share their talents and stories with our community by giving them
a dignified forum for expression despite their detention.

Perhaps the best way to understand the legal process is to serve as a juror.

We would like to offer the Legal Studies majors the opportunity to serve as jurors in Professors Cynthia McGuinn and Rich Schoenberger’s Advanced Trial Prep class’ final trials at Berkeley Law.

Please feel free to invite your friends as we begin planning our future big events for next semester! Universities and publicly funded research institutions will be part of the solution to the access to medicines crisis by promoting medical innovation in the public interest and ensuring that all people regardless of income have access to essential medicines and other health-related technologies.

In 2011, the State of Texas enacted redistricting plans that failed to create new Latino-majority seats, despite the fact that there had been dramatic growth in Texas’ Latino population over the past decade. Nina Perales, Vice President of Litigation at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and lead attorney in recent successful cases against the State of Texas, describes the overt and covert discrimination embedded in the Texas redistricting process and the legal strategy and evidence that convinced the federal court that the plans are discriminatory. Using data, maps, depositions and legislative emails she demonstrates how Latinos were literally drawn out of political representation in Texas and the critical role of the courts in drawing them back in.

In its inaugural year, the Peter E. By cultivating student leaders, the program will have an ever-broader impact in helping those students to engage their peers in public service.

This innovative program will provide need-based scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $5,000, reducing the financial contribution expected of students and their families and making it possible for students to volunteer more time in service activities.
Change to Boalt Jury Opportunity

Students, Professor Schoenberger needs to change the jury selection class from 4/11 to 4/10. Please see message below. Please let him know whether this change frees you up to act as a juror that evening.

Perhaps the best way to understand the legal process is to serve as a juror. We would like to offer the Legal Studies majors the opportunity to serve as jurors in Professors Cynthia McGuinn and Rich Schoenberger’s Advanced Trial Prep jury selection class and final trials at Berkeley Law. The law students will first engage in a jury selection exercise on April 10, 2012 (formerly April 11) from 6:30-9:00. We will provide pizza! We are looking for 6 jurors this night.

On April 21, the students will conduct a full on jury trial including short jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross examinations and closing arguments. Most of the students have extensive experience in Mock Trial competitions. We are looking for 8-10 jurors to observe the trial and conduct deliberations in a very interesting child endangerment case! Broken bones, felonies, intrigue! What could be more interesting! The trials will be held from approximately 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Boalt Hall’s courtroom classroom.

If interested in attending class on April 10, please reply to Professor Schoenberger at rschoenberger@walkuplawoffice.com by 4/6/12.

7) Biofuels Talk

Biofuels Talk

Biofuels Lifecycle Assessment Talk (with Prof. Horvath)

Are you interested in learning more about biofuels? Biofuels are a hot topic when it comes to ongoing efforts to make our energy supply more secure and sustainable. But are they a wise choice when you consider their cradle-to-grave environmental impacts?

BERC Undergrad is pleased to welcome Professor Arpad Horvath, of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, for a talk on Life-cycle Environmental Assessment of Biofuels. The talk will take place on Wednesday, April 18th from 6-7 pm at Haas C320.

This event, aimed at the undergraduate level, is part of an ongoing Speaker Series that will try to address the following questions: What are the resource inputs for various energy sources, and their waste outputs, and how do these compare between energy sources? How can this inform our decisions regarding which energy sources are best from the standpoint of efficient use of resources?

4) Haas Public Svc Leaders Prog

Haas Public Svc Leaders Prog

Dear campus community:

We are excited to be launching an ambitious new campus program to support and nurture students who are committed to public service – one of the hallmarks of the Berkeley experience.

Made possible by the generosity of Mimi Haas, and named in honor of her late husband, the Peter E. Haas Public Service Leaders Program seeks to grow a new generation of leaders devoted to serving society. Peter Haas was a legendary Cal alumnus and friend to UC Berkeley who was known for his deep commitment to helping others.

In its inaugural year, the program will provide scholarships and leadership training to up to 20 undergraduates who are eligible for financial aid and demonstrate a commitment to public service.

Students who are selected will participate in a year-long leadership development program through the Cal Corps Public Service Center.

Applications are now being accepted for the program, and the deadline for current students to apply is Tuesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. More information and applications can be found on the Cal Corps Public Service Center website: http://publicservice.berkeley.edu

Please spread the word and let potential candidates with a strong commitment to public service and demonstrated financial need know about this new program.

With warm regards.
Yours sincerely,
Robert J. Birgeneau, Chancellor

4) Be a Juror at Boalt

Be a Juror at Boalt

Perhaps the best way to understand the legal process is to serve as a juror. We would like to offer the Legal Studies majors the opportunity to serve as jurors in Professors Cynthia McGuinn and Rich Schoenberger’s Advanced Trial Prep jury selection class and final trials at Berkeley Law. The law students will first engage in a jury selection exercise on April 11, 2012 in Room 140 from 6:30-9:00.

9) UCD Law Symposium

UCD Law Symposium

Reminder: Please join us for the annual UC Davis School of Law, Environmental Law Symposium

April 13th, 2012 from 9:00am to 4:30pm
Please note change in start time

In 2002, the California Legislature established the Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) Program to increase California’s reliance on renewable energy resources. The RPS Program requires investor-owned utilities, electric service providers, and community choice aggregators to increase procurement from eligible renewable energy resources until they reach 33% by 2020. The 2012 symposium will explore the obstacles of meeting this goal through solar development.

Featuring an introduction by Senator Joe Simitian and a keynote presentation by Dr. Robert Weisenmiller, Chair of the California Energy Commission

Morning panels will discuss the legislative imperative behind California’s RPS goals and the mechanics of solar development, including current economic and siting challenges. The afternoon panels will specifically focus on the implications of solar development on farmland and sensitive habitat, and the statutory frameworks for permitting and mitigation. The closing panel will dicuss the role of local governments in facilitating solar energy development within California, including counties’ recent efforts to plan for and to permit solar projects while maintaining their communities’ traditional industries and identity.

For more information regarding the schedule, including speakers and moderators, please visit our symposium website at http://students.law.ucdavis.edu/ELS/2012/index.html.
