SUMMER 2013 JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
VOLUNTEER/UNDERGRADUATE INTERN

Death Penalty Clinic
University of California, Berkeley, School of Law

Ideal candidates for this unique volunteer opportunity are dependable and responsible. We are looking for two interns for the summer with the possibility of continuing into the school-year. We require an undergraduate, preferably a junior or senior, who can commit a minimum of 30 hours during the summer. These are unpaid positions. Continuation in the fall is not required.

The Death Penalty Clinic is a law practice engaged in direct representation of individuals on death row. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with faculty, the Clinic paralegal, and law students. They will be held to the same confidentiality requirements as faculty, staff, and law students in the Clinic.

Responsibilities include, but certainly are not limited to: exhibit and pleading organization; extensive filing; assisting in record preservation and management; and updating our records database. As a volunteer, you must be dependable in terms of your time commitment, trustworthy because of the serious responsibility of working on capital cases, and fully understand the accuracy and close attention to detail necessary to support the Clinic and, ultimately, our clients. In turn, you will be exposed to, and have the opportunity to observe, the realities of working on a capital case.

For some more information regarding the Clinic, see our website at http://www.law.berkeley.edu/clinics/dpclinic.

Interested in volunteering? Check out CalJobs ID 835206, or email your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest to Jessica Michals, Clinic Paralegal jmichals@law.berkeley.edu.

Course Description:

This course will explore the educational experience of Latinos. A particular emphasis will be given to Latino higher education enrollment and achievement patterns, and the current trends that show that Latinos are most likely to utilize the community college system as an entry point to four-year colleges/universities.

Topics that will be explored:

Why are so few Latinos students eligible for four year college admissions upon high school graduation? What is the performance pattern of Latinos in higher education? What are the community college transfer and graduation rates for Latinos? What factors influence these rates and/or patterns? How do these higher educational enrollment patterns for Latinos impact Latino graduate school attendance patterns for Latinos? Does community college enrollment hinder or benefit graduation school admissions?

Successful student outreach and support programs will be discussed and evaluated. Specific attention will be give to University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and California Community College (CCC) programs that have a high Latino student participation rate, such as MESA, Puente, AVID and the UCLA/CCC Honors Program. Educational leaders from various statewide Latino outreach programs will be guest speakers in the course, as well as admissions directors from the UC, CSU, and private school systems. Local community college Presidents, Deans, and Student Services leaders will be invited to share their experiences and assessment of status of Latinos in today’s California Community Colleges. The graduate school admission process will be reviewed and analyzed with the assistance and expertise of current UC Berkeley Graduate Division staff. Students will be able to utilize this unique graduation admission presentation to navigate their own graduate admission/graduate school journey.

Students will engage in an active research project and will be have an opportunity to share their findings and recommendations with the class at the end of the semester.

Student will be encouraged to implement their intervention strategy in their community, high school, or community college.

Instructor(s): Elisa Oreglia/Neha Kumar
Time: MWF 2-4:30 (Session A: May 28 – July 3, 2013)
Location: 210 South Hall
CCN: 49825

This course will encourage students to think broadly about the interplay between technological systems, social processes, economic activities, and political contingencies in efforts to alleviate poverty. Students will come to understand poverty not only in terms of high-level indicators, but from a ground-level perspective as €˜the poor experience and describe it for themselves. The role played by individuals and societies of the developing world as active agents in processes of technology adoption and use will be a central theme. Technologies connection to socio-economic development efforts will be put into historical context by exposing students to several phases of intensive interest including the green revolution,€™ the push towards industrialization, the â€appropriate technologies€™ movement, and more recent interest in digital technologies.

Introductory material for the course will challenge students to think about exactly how €˜technology€™ is defined and about the wide variation amongst devices/systems covered by the term. Course topics will be explored through a series of case studies that will be supplemented by cross-disciplinary readings. The use of illustrative case studies will make the course accessible to undergraduates with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. In our discussion of €˜information technologies€™ we will explore not only key form factors such as computers, the Internet, and mobile phones, but also their incorporation into broader practices such as micro-business and agriculture.

Lauri Needs Volunteers!!
I would be forever in your debt if you would volunteer for the Legal Studies Commencement Ceremony this year. The ceremony is on Sunday, May 19th in the early morning.
I need people who will for sure show up to help.

E-mail me ASAP if you can come for sure. Thank you!
It’s actually a fun event, the graduates are all happy and so are their families.
You’ll be able to see what the ceremony is like, see your friends graduate and join in the festivities at the reception afterward. The tasks are really easy, too.
Oh, and you can feel really good about helping me out!

I need at least 3 volunteers, but more than three would be great.

Thanks!

Free Software for Grads

Hi, my name is Rachel Lim and I am speaking on behalf of the Student Technology Council, regarding the productivity applications offered by our school, and its limited availability to the graduating seniors.

Because graduation is coming up, we as the STC, would like to reach our seniors to take advantage of downloading these free and useful resources such as Adobe and Microsoft software (along with other programs, such as an upgrade to Windows 8), that they will not be able to access for free once they graduate. Can you help us to reach our students?

Many graduated seniors have already complained about having missed out on this opportunity, so we hope to reach students now before the influx of graduation emails.

Thank you so much,

2) Jurors Needed TONIGHT @Boalt

Jurors Needed TONIGHT @Boalt
Perhaps the best way to understand the legal process is to serve as a juror.
We would like to offer the Legal Studies majors the opportunity to serve as jurors in Professor Cynthia McGuinn and Professor Rich Schoenberger’s Advanced Trial Prep classes at Berkeley Law.
The law students will spend the next two Tuesday evenings conducting jury selection.
You would act as a prospective juror. Most of the students have extensive experience in Mock Trial competitions, but precious little in the art of picking a jury.
The classes will be held from 6:25 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on April 2 and April 9 in Room 170 at Boalt Hall

If interested, please reply ASAP to Professor Schoenberger at

rschoenberger@walkuplawoffice.com.

Thanks very much.
We’ll have pizza!

Advisor Codes
Please come by to get your advisor code 8:30-12 and 1:30-4.
Poke your head in, wave and if I’m with a student please wait on the purple couch.
I don’t want you to have to wait in line…so come in now while it’s quiet.

If you need to declare in order to get your advisor code because you got the scary e-mail from the College, have your Petition to Declare, your essay and your Application to the Major ready to go.

A new advisor code is needed each semester to get into Telebears if you are declared, or need to declare.
If you are a double major, two digits will come from me and the other two from your other major advisor.
If you are abroad, e-mail me.

Thank you to the 56 people who have already gotten their AC from me! You guys are great!

come in come in come in come in come in come in come in come in come in
