Those of you who are on the Fa20, Sp21 and Su21 degree lists should follow the instructions in the Chancellor’s e-mail to register to walk and/or set up your slide for the ceremony whether you are walking or not.

If you do not set up your slide, there will be one set up for you with just your name and major…but no picture or quote from you and your name will be read based on what the reader thinks your name should sound like, with no pronunciation help from you.

Talk abstract. For years, we have witnessed expansive dialogue in response to the growing wisdom that racial bias is quite often baked into our data, digital and technological systems. What are some ways we can begin to systematize our evolving anti-racism understanding, get activated to shape policy, and counter harmful narratives and discourse that often lead to reactionary innovation? This talk seeks to deepen questions and analysis, and encourage activation towards coliberation.

Tawana Petty is a mother, social justice organizer, youth advocate, poet and author. She is intricately involved in water rights advocacy, data and digital privacy rights education and racial justice and equity work. She is the National Organizing Director at Data for Black Lives, former director of the Data Justice Program at Detroit Community Technology Project, co-founder of Our Data Bodies, a convening member of the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition, a Digital Civil Society Lab fellow at the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, and director of Petty Propolis, a Black woman led artist incubator primarily focused on cultivating visionary resistance through poetry, literacy and literary workshops, anti-racism facilitation, and social justice initiatives.

The United States District Court – Eastern District of California is accepting applications for a one-year undergraduate student internship. This unique opportunity focuses on diversity and innovation as part of the Model Intern Diversity Pilot Program offered through the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The goal is to expose, develop and place talented, underserved youth in the courts and prepare them for future permanent employment opportunities while training them to be champions of diversity and inclusion.

Students beginning their junior or senior year at a university are encouraged to apply. The internship will be in our Sacramento courthouse.

The internship will commence on or shortly after June 7, 2021 and the student will be permitted to work full-time (no more than 40-hours/week) during the summer semester (i.e., June – September) and part-time (no more than 20-hours/week) during the Fall and Spring semesters (i.e., October – May). The internship concludes on June 3, 2022.

POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of our Chief Judge, the intern will function as a student trainee and will rotate through assignments with two U.S. District Judges, a U.S. Magistrate Judge, a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, our U.S. Probation Office and the Librarian of the Anthony M. Kennedy Library & Learning Center. During these rotations, the intern will:

  •   Observe court proceedings: civil, criminal and bankruptcy matters to develop familiarity with the judicial process;
  •   Shadow assigned officials to develop an understanding of the federal judiciary;
  •   Collaborate on assigned projects with a wide range of judges and staff in the federal judiciary;
  •   Prepare overview case outlines, memos with copies of cases, email summaries, oral briefing and/or research charts and provide clerical assistance as needed;
  •   Assist with handling special events and civic-oriented community outreach events;
  •   Participate in the court’s thirteen-week extern seminar series with guest speakers who convey the structure, history and operations of the court and highlight differences between and among the three branches of government;
  •   Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must attend an accredited college/university and be a full-time junior or upcoming senior

undergraduate college student throughout the term of the internship. Applicants must also:

  • Be strong academic achievers;
  • Exhibit qualities such as strong character and self-sufficiency under challenging circumstances;
  • Be self-directed and able to work with limited supervision;
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for the value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace;
  • Possess good organizational and planning skills, and be able to demonstrate effective projectcoordination, facilitation, and implementation based on past work or school experience. Preference will be given to first generation college students.
