2020 Undergraduate Human Contexts and Ethics of Data Essay Prize
The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society is holding a competition for UC
Berkeley undergraduates doing independent, original research on social, cultural,
historical, policy, or ethical issues at the intersection of data science, technology and
society. Term papers and stand-alone thesis chapters (please note: not entire theses) are
eligible for consideration. Thematically appropriate projects in non-textual media, such
as films, documentaries, Jupyter Notebooks, and design projects, will also be considered.

Interested students should submit their work via form by April 1, 2020.
Submissions will be evaluated anonymously by the members of the Human Contexts and
Ethics Student Team as well as Faculty and Graduate Student Affiliates of the Division of
Computing, Data Science, and Society.

The winner will receive a cash award ($300); two honorable mentions will also be
selected. We will announce the results at a reception during the Data Science
Education Showcase on May 5 for all who have entered the competition.

We are pleased to announce that Facebook and Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP have come together to create the Facebook Legal Scholars Program.  The Facebook Legal Scholars program is a two-day intensive workshop intended to provide incoming 1Ls from backgrounds which are historically underrepresented in the legal profession with insight into the legal profession and the tools necessary to succeed in law school.  The program, which is scheduled to take place at Facebook’s offices in Menlo Park, California from July 30 – August 1, 2020.

We are particularly seeking candidates with proven academic abilities and a demonstrated active commitment to the furtherance of diversity and inclusion.  Interested students should submit a copy of their resume, the completed application, and a personal statement or no more than 500 words to by June 15, 2020.  Applicants will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.

Facebook Legal Scholars Program

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Facebook Legal Scholars Program is a collaboration between Facebook’s Legal Department and Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP as part of these entities’ efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. The Facebook Legal Scholars Program is a two and a half-day intensive workshop designed to provide participants with insight into the legal profession and the tools necessary to succeed in law school. Among other things, participants will experience simulated law school classes and will receive feedback on graded homework assignments; will receive instruction on legal writing and resume writing; will be guided on case-briefing, outlining and time management; will hear from law school deans and current law students on how to successfully transition from the last year of college to the first year of law school; and will receive practical tips from distinguished members of the judiciary. Scholars will also have the opportunity to network with and develop personally and professionally from in-house counsel in a Fortune 100 corporation and heavy hitters in the Silicon Valley legal community. The 2020 dates for The Facebook Legal Scholars Program are July 30 – August 1. Space is limited. Thus, interested students are encouraged to apply early. Housing is not provided and travel costs are the responsibility of the candidate. However, local ground transportation will be covered. QUALIFICATIONS We are particularly seeking candidates with stellar academic credentials that have demonstrated an active commitment to the furtherance of diversity and inclusion. Preference will be given to individuals entering law school in Fall 2020 or Spring 2021.
