3) Vol. for Research

Vol. for Research

My name is Octavion Spears, and I am an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. I am currently working as a research assistant for two graduate students in The Ohio State University’s sociology department, Laura Frizzell and Sadé Lindsay. We are conducting interviews for a research project, and I was hoping that you could be of assistance in disseminating information to people who may be interested in participating. We are looking to interview approximately 120 Black women about the impacts of police violence. Virtually all research on police violence has examined Black men’s experiences, so we think it’s critical that Black women be able to tell their stories as well. We’re looking to interview all Black women – not only those with direct experiences of police violence – because we expect that the experiences of acquaintances and media portrayals of this violence will also have an impact on Black women’s lives. This research project has been ethically cleared by our Institutional Review Board, and all participants will be compensated with an Amazon e-gift card. See details below.
______________

We are looking to interview Black women as part of a larger project seeking to understand the impact of police violence against members of the Black community, on Black women specifically. We believe that it is crucial to understand the unique perspectives of Black women on this issue.

Requirements:
•    Must identify as a Black woman
•    Must be at least 18 years old
•    Must live in the United States

Time Commitment:
•    Study will last up to 2 hours and will take place via phone or video chat
•    Participation is voluntary

Compensation:
•    Participants will be compensated with a $10 Amazon gift card

6) Pathways to Law

Pathways to Law

I am a volunteer of the Community Services Committee of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area (AABA).  AABA, UC Hastings Vietnamese American Law Society, and various community organizations will be hosting our 11th annual pre-law conference at UC Hastings on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 9:00am to 4:00pm to encourage college and high school students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, to pursue a legal career.  This is a FREE event.

On Saturday, March 14, 2020, the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area’s Community Services Committee, UC Hastings Vietnamese American Law Society, and other bar associations and student groups will be hosting their 11th annual pre-law diversity conference, “Pathways to Law”, to encourage students to pursue a law degree. Our conference will expose high school students, college students, and recent young graduates, to law school and the legal profession. We will discuss career options available with a law degree from the perspective of persons from Asian and Pacific Islander backgrounds. The conference features distinguished panelists who have used their law degrees in a variety of ways. Panelists will discuss their legal careers in the public and private sectors – including firm attorneys, public interest attorneys, government attorneys, judges, and in-house counsel – as well as career paths outside the “traditional” practice of law. Also, a panel of Bay Area law students will share their experiences from admission through graduation, and attendees will get a taste of law school through an interactive mock class.
