Intrnshp Advice

Diane Aaron, a partner at the law firm of Buffington & Aaron, a firm which specializes in general tax and corporate law, employee benefits and estate planning. Diane, a Berkeley Law alumna, has previously posted positions on Handshake and hired Berkeley grads both for legal assistant and attorney positions! Here are her top tips for success as you apply to legal internships or entry-level legal jobs.

— For Diane, it’s all about writing a compelling, well-written and customized cover letter. Writing ability is so critical to succeeding in law!

— This is a no-brainer, but spelling errors are an immediate deal breaker. Attention to detail is also critical in this profession.

— Show that you’re an interesting person! A brief interests section on your resume is an easy way to do this. Diane’s LinkedIn profile includes her hobbies: playing piano, reading novels, tennis and exploring the city.

— What’s the most surprising thing about working in law? Diane shared that many people don’t realize how much they need to FOCUS. Reading dense material, paying close attention to language… That requires a lot of patience and attention! Be sure to demonstrate that you’ve gained this skill through coursework or other past experiences.

— And no, you don’t necessarily need previous legal experience. But show your strong interest in law, your willingness to learn, and follow the aforementioned advice– you’ll be in good shape! And remember, the Career Center is always here to take your resume, cover letter and interviewing skills to the next level.
